Horses and Fireworks?
#1
I never ever thought I'd have to worry about big fireworks where we live but it seems someone nearby has decided to go BIG with fireworks. He has gotten the necessary licensing to blast the biggest an individual can shoot. They are LOUD and light up the sky. We were entertained with them the weekend after Thanksgiving and then on Christmas Eve!! The family doing it say they are "creating memories with their children" and said if we thought the fireworks they set off before were big, just wait till NYE. I pray they don't create injured animals along with their "memories".

There is nothing to do about stopping them. We have no ordinances in the county and anyone can do pretty much what they want to when they want to.

Do you have to deal with fireworks and what effects do they have on your horses?

We have had to put up with them here. I would put the boys in the run in. If I left them out, they ran and we're quite upset. They didn't seem too nervous when in the run in.

Seems to depend a lot on the horse. Pepper ignores fireworks completely, but then, she's always inside the barn when they're going off, and she's been to fairs and things where people were setting off cannons, too. I suppose it might help to figure out whether it's the *sight* of the fireworks or the *noise* of them that bothers your horse more. They do make horsie earplugs.

Maybe it'll rain and we won't be bothered tonight! I guess I'll just put them in the dry lot as usual but may throw out a couple of flakes when/if they start them.

Raining here, maybe it'll make its way north.
