Finally got my dream saddle!
Ever since we started riding out at Ed Chambers' barn, I have been coveting his custom saddles made by Chris Herschberger. I finally was able to get one myself, thanks to a nice bonus at work this year! I went out to Chris' Judson Harness & Saddlery shop in March, sat down with him and discussed all the features I wanted, took Cisco out and had him fitted for a tree (it is pretty much a basic Quarter Horse tree with a little extra height in the gullet, so it should fit other horses too), and placed my order. I picked up my finished saddle in August. I was pleasantly surprised at the shorter than usual wait time. The saddle is a Wade tree, flat plate rigging with brass hardware, 16 1/2" roughout seat, 4" post horn, Cheyenne roll on the cantle, Nettles laminated wood stirrups, Arizona twist pre-turned stirrup leathers, rope strap, medium oil color, minimal tooling with a barbed wire border and my one indulgence, a petal flower carving on the horn cap.

Here are some pictures:

I am very happy with how it turned out and I think Cisco is finding it comfortable too. Herschberger's craftsmanship is excellent and has been compared to saddles costing twice as much by some very well-known saddlemakers. This saddle should last my lifetime and Adam's too.
Beautiful piece - I like them understated.
What's that horn wrap made of, and can it withstand rope burns?

Very nice! I like the looks of it. Just the right amount of tooling.

Congrats, Harv!

Thanks guys!
AD, I am not sure what it's made of... I should ask him. Traditionally it's mule hide, but I don't know if they still use that or not. It is there to take the rope burn, so I hope it does... not that I'm gonna be burning that many ropes![Wink] Next time I am up there I will try to remember to ask him what he uses for horn wraps.

Beautiful Saddle Harv. You can see the workmanship and pride in of the maker in it.

That saddle is a family heirloom for sure.
