Been looking at autotrader here and there to see if the deal of the century out there on a truck that can pull more. Looking at the F 250s between 2004-2006. Bad problems with 2006 Diesel 6.0L engines, so looking at the gas ones.
Question: The 5.4L engine: will that give me plenty of power to pull combined 3 horse and trailer wt 6000# and not lug uphill? My F 150 numbers say I can do it (4.6L) but even with one horse it is 45 on freeway with 1 horse if uphill grade.
Fire season starting so thinking a bit ahead. I am OK now on flat road with my current truck to get out...on flat land.
I'm ready for the DE expert help!
PS: flat tire yesterday and had to get towed...practically salivated at the rig the guy had, think it was a Dodge 4500 diesel...whoa!!!!power to the max!

Hey Bones...the 5.4 gasser will pull ya okay, but I would go for the Triton V10 if you want a gasser, or the 7.3 Power Stroke diesel (last made in early 03). You're right about staying away from the early 6.0 Power Strokes...they have a LOT of problems. But the 7.3s are one of the best light duty diesel motors ever built. I love mine. The Triton V10 has something like 350 hp and over 400 ft./lbs of torque...so it has nearly the pulling power of a diesel. I have talked with a lot of people who have the Triton V10s, and they absolutely love 'em. The biggest problem they had with them is on the late 99/early 2000 models they had some issues with spark plug blowouts...but not the later model ones.
Keep in mind one of the most important things is the rear gear ratio. You want at the very least 3.73 gears, and even better is 4.10s. Gearing has as much to do with pulling power as does motor size. |

The easiest way is to ask the dealer what the gear ratio is. But a lot of times, they're too dumb to know.
So, the best way is to check the axle code on the sticker on the inside of the driver's side door. Here's an example of what the Ford sticker looks like:

Then, once you know the axle code, look it up on the chart below. For example, my axle code is F2, which means it's a 4:10 limited slip.
Ford Axle Codes:
The following lists the gear ratios on rear axles.
31 — 3.73 non-limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C1 — 3.73 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
32 — 4.10 non-limited slip, F-250
C2 — 4.10 limited slip, F-250/Excursion

C3 — 4.30 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
36 — 4.56 non-limited slip, F-250
C6 — 4.56 limited slip, F-250

Wow Flooper....thanks for the great info! I will have to print it out to save. me?...I was kinda thinking along the same lines as PaintGal and was going to look for some arrows too...

Ah Flooper! Too late...went shopping and bought the F 250....I will check on the gear ratio but think it is fine. I was wondering about that though and the difference if you have the same 5.4 L engine....and the new F 150s frame changed so they say can pull more. So far liking what I have but need to get it rigged for towing this week.
I'm pulling the old brake controller out of the F 150 and putting it in the new truck. Trailer people thought that would be best way to go and save a little money. |
