Hello! It's me yet again with another question...I was bathing my mare this afternoon, (whew! what a job!) when I noticed that where the hair meets the hoof, that hoof area there had like, dead skin on it, or it seemed a little softer than the rest of the hoof--i realize this is where the hoof grows from-but is there anything I need to do to that area? I brushed it a little to remove the excess dead skin (or it seemed) then thought, hmmm....is this normal?

This sounds like a normal coronet band. When it is wet it looks like what you have described. It will be a little dryer when it is warm & dry come summer.

Yep, sounds normal to me. But it's always worth asking if you aren't sure.... ;)

All is fine and well. As ST and PG said, that is the coronet band. You are correct that is from where the hoof grows. Don't ever fear asking a question to the forum here; we all continue to learn about horses. Even those of us who have been around horses for years! ;o)
