Hi Farmgirl; A shine starts with good nutrition, but after that:
I use a wonderful product called EQ Solutions to bathe our horses WHEN I bathe them, which isn't as often since I don't show any more. Most of the time I hose them off. EQ Solutions is a liquid that you put in a foamer. I love it. For me, it works much better than the other product that's like it, EZ All, or something like that.
Then, Showsheen on mane and tails. That's it. Our horses are shiny and soft and smell good.
Hope that helps.

I'd stick with Show Sheen. Not only does it put a nice shine on your horse, it protects from dirt too and makes touch-ups easier to do. Just don't use it where your saddle sits. It'll slide all over the place .
I guess I should add that I wash my horses with Orvis animal shampoo. A small dab goes a long, long way.

First and formost is good and proper nutrition. And lots and lots of elbow grease in daily grooming. For a poor keeper, I like to add just a small about of rice bran to the grain twice a day until they are in proper condition. 1/3 cup is all that is needed. And since my horses are out pretty much 24/7 (with access to the stalls when the sun is too hot or the bugs are too much)I like to condition their coat with Vetrolin Shine. It has sun block in it to prevent the bleached out coat. It smells great and makes them soft and shinny. I took this pic a few weeks ago when I was fitting her for a saddle. You can see the shine.
