Just in case you haven't seen them advertised or noticed them in your supermarket, Ziplock has now come out with fantastic "mega-bags." I bought a box of three of the XXL size. These are 2-ft. x 3-ft. size. They have gusseted bottoms for width. They are see-through, heavy plastic, naturally they zip shut and they also have a cut-out handle at the top above the zipper.
I can really see using these for transporting hay, and in my case, soft items so I can use them for padding between hard sided equipment that could bang otherwise in 2nd stall during transport (e.g., clothes, sleeping bag, pillows, towels, etc.) Also for taking fresh shavings along. They're sturdy enough so if you don't beat them up, you'd get at least several uses out of them.
Other "discovery" -- right under my nose so naturally ignored it. Walmart has "right" hanging shoe bags which are the flat style and come with over-the-door hooks. (The see-through plastic ones, not the canvas ones.) These are only $6.24 each and lend themselves to being cut-to-fit. For instance, the unit is way too long for practical use in my trailer, but if cut in half, the top 3 rows of pockets could be hung over the center divider on human side and hold all sorts of stuff. Again, gusseted pockets. The cut off lower half would actually lend itself very well to putting tools, etc. into, and then rolling it shut sideways, and tying off the closed roll with bungies, to keep behind the seat in my truck.
Top half would also come in handy as a "camp kitchen" setup hung over the side of truck -- paper towels, utensils, stacked glasses, cups, etc., condiments (spices, etc.)
Very cheap, seeing lots of possibilities to keep things separated but individually rolled so they can be fit into various nooks and crannies during transport.

They say Necessity is the mother of invention. But I've also heard that Laziness is the father.
Actually the shoe bag idea for horse trailer wasn't mine at all. A woman on another thread says she uses them in her trailer, but she has a big stock trailer she's turned into living quarters so she can get away with sizes I can't. The only thing I can lay claim to is cutting the thing in half so I can hang the top over the center divider. But then what do you do with all those pockets that are left over in the other half I've cut off? Tools in truck, kitchen stuff in camp... that's how it goes. A storage possibility waiting for a use. My feeble little mind can amuse itself for hours with such trivia, lol.
One other thing she mentioned (which I actually am looking for and can't find anywhere)... Rubbermaid makes what they call a "2-step economy step stool." This is a molded unit, does not collapse (that in itself would make me pass it over). However, the top step is 16 inches high. In transport, she flips it over and stuffs stuff in it (the inside is hollow because it is molded). Once docked, she uses it as steps into her trailer, also as a seat since it's the right height for that (no side rails on this model) and finally, it serves as her mounting block. So it serves 3 purposes while docked (to say nothing of its intended purpose if you're attaching a high line to a tree or whatever) and it contains stuff during transport. Can't find the darned thing anywhere! Walmart, Target, Staples, Home Depot. Nada. Cosco makes one which my hardware store can order (and it's an inch taller) but the top step looks smaller and its legs look wider. Will probably just go with that one, because it just looks like a really handy thing to have aboard. She has two of them, one she keeps inside her LQ (open concept). She uses that one purely as a seat, inside the trailer, and puts her shoes under it. Carol

I have thought about using the large zip lock bags for soaking a foot, when necessary. Anyone ever tried this?

Well, now that my home base is New England, I'd have to pronounce it "Mahhther." Rule: You take the R and throw it out as though it doesn't exist. Then you stick an R arbitrarily at the end of a vowel.

I got a bunch of the XL and XXL bags for my tack room when they first came out. They work great for storing horse sheets and blankets, show blankets, some saddle pads, boots, etc. I love them.
I think I saw that step stool at HomeDepo or was it the other one....not sure what town I saw it in. |
