I'm in the midst of trying to find new saddles for my big quarter horses. How does gullet width, bar type, and the angle all fit together? The more I learn the more jumbled it all seems.

Also, are arab trees typically wider or narrower than QH bars? FQHB?

Thanks!

Once you figure it out, let me know.

The bar type is just a name assigned to the gullet width and bar angle. One company may call it a QH bar while another would call it a FQHB bar.

The angle of the bar is the largest determining factor of the conformation of the horse (IMHO). Narrow angle - narrow horse. Wide angle - wide horse. Tucker saddles have the same gullet width in all saddles and have either qh bars (narrow angle) or FQHB bars (wide angle).

The width of the bar would determine the size of the horse (height/weight). Larger horse - usually over 1100 lbs I would recommend the Wide Tree. Horses under 1100 lbs I would recommend the Regular Tree.

Large narrow horse = Wide Gullet with narrow angle.
Large wide horse = Wide Gullet with wide angle.
Small narrow horse = Narrow gullet with narrow angle.
Small wide horse = Narrow gullet with wide angle.

To throw a wrench into the works - did I mention that Tucker only has one gullet width of 5 3/8" and either a Wide angle or Narrow angle. Only two combinations with them.

The Arab tree is usually a very narrow gullet and a wide angle.

The saddle companies do not usually provide the width of the gullet and never provide the angle of the gullet. This is only two dimensional. You should also consider the rock of your horse's back. Some backs are very flat while others have a dip in them. This also affects the fit and sometimes require different saddles. I have a more in-depth article of these three dimensions and common problems when having an ill fitting saddle at http://www.horsesaddleshop.com/howshoulifit.html

I long for the good ole' days where you would throw a saddle on a horse and ride it. When all saddles fit all horses.

And then what business would you be in? hehehehe Just teasin' Chuck! But if every saddle fit every horse, I would think that saddle sales would experience a drop, or would have never grown to be the business that it is. So, be careful what you wish for.....
