7 years ago my daughter brought home a black lab / blue healer mix puppy. The puppy was very cute but the lab/heeler mix was intense. My daughter named her Tiki and I threatened to shoot Tiki at least once a week during her first year. She ate the cover off the grill, chewed up a wicker chair and ate the better part of a pop can. She grew on us and we found she LOVED (I mean this dog had a SERIOUS addiction) to chase sticks. Throw it any where and she would bring it back for more. If you wouldn't throw the stick, she would throw the stick at you. To lengthen the time between throws, we got inventive with throwing, making it land in places where she would have to go around fences and through gates to retrieve it. Throwing it on things, like the hay wagon, also slowed her down, but not for long. It seemed natural to take her with us camping and riding and Tiki LOVED it. She ran at least twice as far as we rode, running up the trail and back and chasing things along the way. We also found that she could jump high enough to give you the stick while you were sitting on a horse. Throw the stick in a pile of downed limbs and she would bring back the exact stick you threw. In the campgroud, children loved her, she kept bringing that stick back, no matter how many times they threw it. On more than one occasion I turned down money from people who wanted to buy her.

Last night I held her while she crossed the rainbow bridge. This morning I buried her next to my good mare I buried 2 years ago - those two covered a lot trails with me. I am still in utter disbelief that Tiki is gone, she was one of a kind and I miss her so very much.

Rest in peace my very good girl - I miss you

A lovely poem Hook! Thank you for sharing. Yes, it does bring comfort (and tears). Thanks everyone for your hugs and words, they also bring comfort. I so miss that dog!

I took my other 3 to the vet yesterday and he gave them all a clean bill of health. We will never know what took Tiki so suddenly (I was far to upset to be thinking rationally and inquire about the cost of a necropsy) but I am resting easier knowing that the other 3 are all healthy.

I get misty every time I read this one. We have several waiting for us.

Juli I feel for you so much, having been on this same journey a week ago with my old spaniel, I read your story and Hooks poem with tears streaming down my face, just be glad that you were with her to the end and you know without doubt that it wasn't a painful or horrible way as so many less fortunate animals suffer.

Luv'n'hugs from across the pond

They sure do take a piece of us when they go. I hope the thoughts in this poem from an unknown author will give you a bit of comfort.

I Stood By Your Bed Last Night

Author Unknown

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled with the key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away"

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "goodnight, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out... then come home to be with me.

It is incredible how a dog, cat, or horse can worm their way into our hearts. Remember those good times with Tiki, Juli. Keep them close to your heart and never let them go. There is no better way to keep our animal family members alive inside of us for the rest of our days.

Very sorry to hear about your loss, the expression on her face in your picture shows that boundless enthusiasm that you describe. Hugs to you.

Gee, that is terrible; still a relatively young dog, too. That makes it even worse. I'm so sorry for your loss!

So sorry for your loss. **Big Hugs**

Every time I read about one of us losing our pet, it always brings tears to my eyes for those I have loved and lost and those I'll lose in the future.

Will we stop bringing pets into our lives that we WILL outlive time and again, and go through this heartbreak time and again?

YES !!

Each one of our beloved fur friends make it worth the risk.
